MA Industrial and Organizational Psychology

M.A. Program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology


This program is designed for students interested in pursuing advanced training in applied workplace psychology. This includes (a) job analysis and the development and validation of personnel selection and performance appraisal systems, (b) the implementation and evaluation of employee and management training and development programs, (c) enhancing employee motivation and morale, and (d) related activities that employ psychological principles and practices to increase organizational effectiveness.

Unlike the Master of Arts with a Major in Psychology, this program is NOT a transitional stage leading to doctoral degree candidacy.

The program is designed as a part-time, 2-year program.  The typical course load is 2 courses (6 cr.) in the fall and winter semesters, and 1 course (3 cr.) in the summer semesters.  

International students, and domestic students wishing to be full-time (8 cr. fall and winter), will need to register for elective course in addition to the 30 credits required.  Elective courses from outside the psychology department, ie. business, economics, communications, etc.; may require departmental and/or instructor permission to register.

Admission to this program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School. Students may enter this program in the fall, winter, or spring/summer semester. Application deadlines are as follows:

Degree Requirements

The Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology is offered only with a Plan C option: 30 credits of coursework with no thesis or essay.

 Admission Requirements

 To be admitted, students should meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00.
  • A course in introductory psychology
  • A course in statistics with a grade of B or better
  • Scores on the general portion of the Graduate Record Exam test taken within five years of application. Application Requirements

Applicants will be asked to submit the following electronically.  The department will not accept hardcopy materials.

  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation:  completed by professors or other professional who know you and your academic work sufficiently well to judge your qualifications for graduate study.  These are submitted electronically via the online application system.  Additional letters are allowed, but optional.
  • Professional Statement:  a one- or two-page professional statement describing your areas of interest in psychology, preparation for graduate school, and career goals.
  • General GRE scores:  Applicants will be asked to self-report their scores in the online application system.  Applicants must also request their official score report be sent by ETS to institution code R1898.
  • Writing Sample:  OPTIONAL.  Writing samples may include senior thesis, conference presentation, or publication.
  • C.V. or Resume:  OPTIONAL. Applicants may upload a C.V. or Resume.
  • Electronic Transcripts:  Applicants must upload transcripts from ALL previous institutions (including Wayne State, if you previously attended classes here). Transcripts may be official, unofficial, copies, or web print outs.
