Linguistics and Medicine

Ellen Barton’s research interests are in the discourse analysis of medical communication and medical rhetoric.  She is working on two major projects at the moment.  One is a discourse analysis of how members of ethics committees deliberate when they are reviewing research with human subjects on an Institutional Review Board.  The other is a discourse analysis of Motivational Interviewing, a method of guided counseling aimed at strengthening intrinsic motivation to change health-related behaviors in overweight and obese adolescents.  She has previously worked on end-of-life discussions, offers to participate in cancer clinical trials, telemedicine in depression care, and discourses of disability.
