Shelly Jo Kraft, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor, and the newest member of the CSD department at Wayne State University.

Professional Interests:

Her current interests focus on the biological and behavioral genetics of stuttering, autism, and hearing loss. Other research interests include neuro-anatomical and functional features of people who stutter, auditory feedback, and the relationship between cognition, temperament, and stuttering severity.

Current Work:


Dr. Kraft's current research projects involve the identification of genes associated with persistent developmental stuttering. She is collaborating internationally to collect DNA samples with colleagues in Australia, Ireland, England, and Canada. Additionally, Dr. Kraft is working to investigate factors that contribute to stuttering severity in children, teens, and adults.


Dr. Kraft is a Co-PI on a new study investigating the effectiveness of iPads in the treatment of social communication skills of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Clinical Work:

Dr. Kraft is a clinical instructor and supervisor at the Wayne State University Speech and Language Center. She is part of a Diagnostics team, and works in Out Patient with children, adolescents, and adults who stutter. Dr. Kraft partners with Dr. Derek Daniels each year to run a 4-week intensive program for adults who stutter.
