Make a Gift to the Department of History

 

The Department of History would like to take a moment to express our appreciation to the many alumni and friends who have donated to the department in the past, and we hope that you will consider a donation today.  Your support helps to fund student scholarships, promote undergraduate and graduate research efforts, and supports faculty research in many ways.  This invaluable support helps to makes the Wayne State University Department of History one of the finest programs in the country.

  • Online - To make an online gift to the The Department of History, please click here.  On the Development page, please check the box under Item 4, "I have additional gift information." A small box will open up that will allow you to specify one of the underlined accounts below, to ensure that your gift is correctly routed within the university. (Just copy from the list below and paste it into the form.)

History Department Research and Scholarship Accounts

  • Faculty Research and Teaching
    • History Research and Development Fund, 220836
      • This general R&D fund supports faculty research at archives here and abroad, as well as travel to professional conferences where they may present that work.  Additionally, this fund helps to defray the costs of securing the rights to images for faculty publications.
      • The R&D fund also helps the Department to match the College for travel grants for History graduate students, to facilitate their research.
    • President Emeritus Thomas N. Bonner Endowed Fund for History, 447305
      • Thomas Bonner, former president of WSU and professor of History, set up this fund upon his retirement to provide the Department with the means to pay for needed improvements, both physical (the redesign of the library/conference room in the FAB) and intellectual (the purchase of research materials).
    •   Milton Covensky Fund for Historical Research, 447159
      • The Covensky Fund provides support for the purchase of library materials, both in the department and for the WSU library system.
  • Graduate Awards
    • Rolf and Jennie Johannesen Endowed Memorial Scholarship, 447147
      • A $500 tuition scholarship for undergraduate or graduate History majors with high GPAs and a demonstrated interest in ancient/classical history (broadly defined), or in the classical tradition from the Middle Ages to the present.
    • Alfred H. Kelly Endowed Memorial Research Award, 444193
      • The History Department may make an award worth up to $600 to reimburse a graduate student for expenses incurred while conducting historical research, including travel.
    • Richard D. Miles Endowed Memorial Scholarship in History, 447998
      •   The History Department may award an annual scholarship worth $500 to a gradaute major who wrote an oustanding paper in HIS 7830 (Methods) or an 8000-level seminar and who earned a GPA of at least 3.25.
    • Joe L. Norris Endowed Memorial Scholarship, 447624
      • The Norris fund awards a $500 scholarship to a graduate major who wrote an outstanding paper in HIS 7830 (Methods) or an 8000-level seminar and who concentrates in American history with a GPA of at least 3.00.
  • Undergraduate Awards
    • Mark and Linee Diem Endowed Scholarship in History, 447204
      • The History Department may award one scholarship worth approximately $3000 in tuition to an undergraduate History major who has completed at least 90 credits and has maintained a high GPA at WSU; has an exceptionally strong record in their study of History overall, particularly in upper-level courses (3000 and above); and demonstrates excellence by writing a term paper in one of those courses.
    • Winfred A. Harbison Endowed Memorial Scholarship in History, 447564
      • The Harbison awards a scholarship of $1000 in tuition to an undergraduate student with a high GPA who has also served as an academic tutor at the WSU Academic Success Center for at least two semesters.
    • Rolf and Jennie Johannesen Endowed Memorial Scholarship, 447147
      • A $500 tuition scholarship for undergraduate or graduate History majors with high GPAs and a demonstrated interest in ancient/classical history (broadly defined), or in the classical tradition from the Middle Ages to the present.
    • F. Richard Place Endowed Memorial Scholarship, 447346
      • One or two awards of $750 each to major who demonstrate excellence in the History Capstone course.  The basis for evaluation is the capstone paper.
    • Sterne-Lion Research Scholarship in History, 445132
      • The History Department may award up to two grants worth approximately $1500 to support a research project proposed by a History major.  These funds augment a university grant through the Honors program.  Deadline for proposals to the Honors Program is in November. 
  • General Scholarships
    • History Department Scholarship Account, 222833
      • A second tutoring scholarship, similar to the Harbison Award, may be given from the general fund.
      • The general scholarship fund also serves to support Graduate Research Travel Awards by providing a match to funds granted by the College.
      • Any funds designated as "scholarship" but not labeled with a specific fund is applied to the general scholarship account.
