Head Start

The Head Start team places graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology in one of eight local Head Start Centers in the Detroit-Metro area.  Students in these placements have opportunities for pull-out SLP treatment as well as inclusive service in the classroom; for either, supervision is done by department faculty.  As one graduate student commented: the Head Start program was "an excellent opportunity for real-world experience... it was a challenging placement that allowed us to work with a young age group... I enjoyed every minute of it!

We provide speech-language and hearing screenings to approximately 300 children each fall semester.  Speech-language evaluations and therapy are also provided following the screening program for those children in need.  Extensive classroom experience with emergent literacy training is available at many sites. Some sites also provide experience with infants and toddlers (0-3) in Early Head Start Centers.  Finally, we coordinate these services with local school districts.
